FOUR SCORES FOR TWELLMAN
Revs win in Mexico

Taylor Twellman scored four goals as the Revolution took a 7-0 win over Inter Playa del Carmen, a Segunda Division Mexican club, in an exhibition Tuesday night.

Adam Cristman, Khano Smith and Willie Sims also scored for the Revolution, who are 3-0 (13-2 goal differential) inthe preseason and will conclude their Mexico trip against Pioneros de Cancun Thursday.

The team had the better of play and held the physical against Inter. The Mexicans made few forays into attack, and its best chances came on free kicks that both sailed high.

Twellman scored off a corner kick in the 14th minute and converted thrice in the second half. Twellman was paired with Cristman, who replaced Pat Noonan (groin), at forward and the pairing functioned well.

The Revolution took the lead off a corner kick from Steve Ralston, the ball going to Shalrie Joseph to head to the left post where Jay Heaps sent a diving header toward the right post for Twellman.

Eight minutes later, Cristman controlled a long pass from Joseph and fired to the far post from 15 yards past goalkeeper Luis Guirola.

The Revolution were set to play in a 3-5-2 alignment with James Riley replacing Michael Parkhurst (shoulder separation) in central defense. And Riley set up the third goal by finding
Smith, who headed the ball down to himself, ran several yards and scored from 12 yards in the 43rd minute.

Inter changed nine players, including inserting goalkeeper Carlos Castro, after halftime. Revolution head coach Steve Nicol kept his starting 11 on the field.

Twellman scored in the 53rd, 62nd and 70th minutes.

Twellman scored a spectacular goal for a 4-0 lead after Ralston ran deep into the right corner and whipped a cross to the middle of the penalty area. Twellman, back to goal, took the ball against two defenders and created space before turning scoring inside the left post.

After a Jeff Larentowicz tackle at midfield spurred pushing and shoving between both teams in the 56th minute, both Larentowicz and Inter’s Nazario Flores were ejected. Larentowicz was cautioned for the tackle and ejected for dissent. Flores had been carded two minutes earlier after his hard tackle on Twellman outside the penalty area.

As the game opened up, Twellman ran onto Smith’s lofted cross from the left and slotting it past Castro. In the 70th minute, Smith collected a long Joseph pass from the center circle and ran toward the left corner, crossed to the far post to Cristman, who headed the ball to Twellman at the penalty spot. Twellman left-footed a first-time blast to push the score to 6-0.

Willie Sims and Chris Loftus, who replaced Twellman and Cristman in the 67th minute, combined in the 85th minute. Loftus ran toward the penalty area from the right corner and sent a through pass that split two defenders to Sims, who sent a hard shot into the upper netting from seven yards out.

Inter had few chances, with their biggest threats coming off free kicks at the end of both the first and second halves. Matt Reis recorded his first shutout of the preseason, making three saves, all on shots from long distance.
