Dayton nips BU in overtime
DAYTON, Ohio – Freshman Ashley Campbell scored on a cornerkick with 40 seconds left in double overtime to lift the University of Dayton over No. 19 Boston University 2-1 Thursday night at Baujan Field.
BU moves to 2-1-0 on the season while Dayton also stands at 2-1-0.
Junior Emma Clark scored the lone goal for BU in the 67th minute for her first tally of the season.
Fellow junior Andrea Green played the entire game in net for the Terriers and finished with a career-high seven saves.
Dayton scored the first goal in the third minute off a corner kick by senior Alysha Mallon. The senior took the first corner kick of the game and nearly scored before the Terriers’ defense knocked the ball out of bounds. Mallon again lined up to take the corner and put just enough curve on the ball for it to bend inside the far post and put the Flyers up early, 1-0.
Emma Clark got the Terriers on the board in the 67th minute off a chip shot from above the penalty box on the left side of the field. Clark put the ball in the right side of the net, just over the reach of Flyers’ keeper Jordin Melchert to tie the game at 1-1.
The Terriers had a great scoring chance in the 33rd minute when junior Megan McGoldrick fired a cross to classmate Kylie Strom 15 yards in front of the goal but the Flyers’ defenders stepped in to break up the play before Strom could take a shot.
Strom later set freshman Lily Creighton up with a pass to the left of the goal in the 43rd minute, which Creighton trapped about 15 yards out. The freshman turned and fired a shot but her strike was too high and sailed over the net. It was the last shot by either team in the first half as Dayton took a 1-0 lead into the break.
The Flyers had the first shot on goal to start the second half, as junior Stephanie Emery struck the ball from about 30 yards out but Green stepped up to make the save in the 46th minute. Just over a minute later, Hewitt came down from the right and dribbled down the center of the box before posting a shot that went wide left. Hewitt then took the Terriers’ second shot on goal in the 50th minute but Melchert was there to make the save.
The Flyers had an opportunity to regain the lead in the 71st minute after Clark was whistled for a foul. Senior Alexis Garcia took a direct kick from 25 yards out but her shot sailed just over the cross bar. Neither team managed a shot on goal in the remainder of regulation and with the scored tied at 1-1 after 90 minutes, the match went into overtime.
Mallon presented the Flyers with an opportunity to score in the first overtime when she placed a corner kick in the center of the box but the BU defense was quick to move the ball away. Dayton then followed with an attempt from junior Juliana Libertin, as she dribbled down the center of the field and shot the ball high.
Junior Madison Clemens recorded the first shot for the Terriers in overtime but missed the net wide to the right. Morrow later took a direct kick from 25 yards out but the ball went right into the hands of the Dayton keeper. The teams remained knotted at 1-1 after the first overtime.
Dayton came up with golden goal with 40 second remaining in the second overtime. Libertin took a corner kick from the near side and sent it into the box where it was first touched by junior Sarah Senoyuit. Campbell scored off the rebound with a header to give Dayton the 2-1 double overtime victory.
Dayton outshot BU, 21-12, and held a 9-6 advantage with shots on goal. The Flyers also led with 10 corner kicks while the Terriers took six.
BU returns to action on Sunday, Aug. 26, when the Terriers host No. 10 Boston College at Nickerson Field at 7pm. The Eagles will be the first ranked opponent the Terriers will face this season.
