Indiana's Zavaleta is men's player of the week

Indiana University forward Eriq Zavaleta has been selected as the Soccer News Net Menís College Player of the Week for the week ending August 26.

Zavaleta scored three goals over the course of the Hoosiersí first two games of the season, connecting with a 10-yarder to tie the score 1-1 in the 34th minute of Fridayís 2-1 win over the St. Louis Billikens. Two days later, Zavaleta scored twice as IU nailed down the Billiken Classic title with a 3-0 win over Cincinnati.

A.J. Corrado set up Zavaletaís scoring play against St. Louis by saving a ball that nearly crossed over the end line. Corrado sent in a centering pass to Zavaleta, who took a strike from 10 yards out and hit the back of the net just inside the left post with the Hoosiersí first shot of the game.

On Sunday, Zavaleta collected his own rebound after his initial shot was blocked, and right-footed it into the lower left corner to snap a scoreless tie with the Bearcats in the 68th minute. He closed out the scoring with an 85th-minute penalty kick after a handball in the box.
