STOPPING THE STORM
Brown tops St. John's 3-0
QUEENS, NY Ė Junior Louisa Pitney and sophomore Chloe Cross scored goals 2:19 apart midway through the first half to help propel the Brown women (1-0-0) to a 3-0 victory over St. Johnís (2-3-0) in its 2012 season opener at Belson Stadium.
Pitney also assisted Crossí goal to finish the night with three points, while junior goalkeeper MC Barrett game up big in goal with seven second-half saves to help preserve the shutout.
With the Red Storm attempting to clear the zone in the 23rd minute, Pitney corralled the ball off her chest and buried her shot into the top of the net, giving Brown a 1-0 lead.
Less than three minutes later, Cross was the recipient of a threaded pass from Pitney, and the sophomore raced in on a breakaway, hitting the top of the net for her first of the year.
The Bears closed out the scoring in the 86th minute on senior Eliza Marshallís first goal of the year. Junior Alison Mullin started the play when she passed up the right side to Marshall, who found the back of the net.
Brown edged St. Johnís in shots, 23-19, and held a 10-8 advantage in shots on goal. St. Johnís edged Brown in corner kicks, 5-4.
Junior Amber Bledsoe earned the start in net and recorded one save to pick up the win, before giving way to Barrett, who stopped all seven shots she faced in the second half, as Brown posted its first shutout of the season.
The Bears host New Hampshire on Sunday in a 4:30 p.m. contest at Stevenson Field.
