Harvard takes opener 2-0 over UMass

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. Haley Washburn and Peyton Johnson each scored off set pieces, as the Harvard opened its season with a 2-0 win at Massachusetts Friday afternoon.

Bethany Kanten earned the shutout for the Crimson, turning aside five shots, while Stephanie Gordon recorded nine saves in net for the Minutewomen. The Crimson held the final count in shots, 19-8, including 11-5 on target, and owned a 9-3 advantage in corner kicks.

Harvard outshot UMass, 6-3, in a scoreless first half, with Gordon making two stops in the frame.

In the second, Peyton Johnson took a corner kick from the left side and sent the ball into the box. Washburn headed it into the left corner of the cage, giving Harvard a 1-0 lead in the 51st minute.

Harvard doubled its lead to 2-0 when Johnson scored off a free kick following a UMass foul in the 72nd minute. Johnson lined up for the kick from about 25 yards out on the left side and fit the shot into the top of the net about Gordon.

The Crimson will host local rival Boston University in Harvard's home opener Monday, Sept. 3 at 7 p.m.
