Three score as Harvard blanks Bobcats 3-0
HAMDEN, Conn. – Elizabeth Weisman, Lauren Varela and Emily Mosbacher each scored, while goalkeepers Bethany Kanten and Cheta Emba combined for the shutout, leading the Harvard women to a 3-0 win at Quinnipiac Wednesday afternoon.
With the win, Harvard improves its record to 3-1-1, marking the best start for Harvard to a season since beginning 4-1 overall in 2001. The loss drops Quinnipiac to 4-1-1 this fall.
Kanten made one save in net for Harvard in the first half, while Emba did not face a shot on goal in the second half by Quinnipiac. Jillian Kelly finished with five saves for the Bobcats. The Crimson controlled the final count in shots, 13-2, and corner kicks, 8-3.
Harvard controlled play early, mustering four of the first five shots, before grabbing a 1-0 lead on a tally by Weisman. Alika Keene earned an assist on the play, setting up the goal by Weisman in the 10th minute. In the 35th minute, Weisman nearly went up by two goals, but Weisman’s chance hit the post.
In the 66th minute, Harvard doubled its advantage to 2-0 with a tally off the foot of Varela, who found the back of the net.
The Crimson capped the scoring when Catherine Coppinger made a pass to Emily Mosbacher, who capitalized for a goal in the 87th minute.
Harvard returns home to host No. 5/12 Boston College Friday at 7 p.m.
