COLLEGE BOOT SPOTLIGHT: JULIAN GRESSEL
Meet the Candidates, and Vote!
Providence senior Julian Gressel is one of three nominees for the New England Soccer News menís college player of the year and the Soccer News Net Menís College Boot, recognizing the national player of the year.
Early in the season, the Friars lost starters Dominik Machado, Tiago MendonÁa, Klisman Sousa and MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List nominee Mac Steeves to injury. That led to Gressel, who led the Friars with 11 assists as a junior, taking on a finisherís role, as he totaled 15 goals (five game-winners) in 22 games. Gressel aligned as a back-to-goal forward, also providing a free kick threat, and even scoring on a shot from behind the halfway line in a 2-1 loss at Clemson Aug. 28. The positional move helped the Friars (15-7-0) go on an eight-game winning streak, reaching the quarterfinals of the NCAA tournament.
Gressel concluded his collegiate career with 27 goals, tied with Eoin Lynch and Steeves for second on the all-time PC list behind John Farren (62), and 26 assists, second to Farren (30).
Gressel, a MAC Hermann Trophy semifinalist and an All-NSCAA Great Lakes first team choice, along with teammate Mark Jecewiz, was named New England Soccer News Player of the Week for the weeks ending Oct. 10 and 24 and Nov. 20.
Fan voting accounts for 40% of the total toward selection of the Soccer News Net College Boot, and the winner of the popular voting receives the Soccer News Net Supportersí Choice award.
