FIRST WIN
Providence women beat Holy Cross, 1-0
WORCESTER, Mass. – Mary Vercollone scored in the 71st minute, and the Providence women held on for a 1-1 double-overtime tie with Holy Cross Friday night at the Linda Johnson Smith Soccer Stadium.
After falling behind on a fifth-minute goal by freshman forward Annie Galvin, and trailing 1-0 at halftime, the Friars roared out of the intermission determined to equalize. They outshot the Crusaders 11-0 in the second half, forcing goalkeeper Carly McCabe into four excellent saves before Vercollone broke through, slipping a low shot just inside the left post.
Providence (1-1-1) added two more shots on goal in the extra frames and outshot the Crusaders 23-4 overall. McCabe made 12 saves. Providence netminder Jessica Goudreault needed only one save, deflecting Cassie Muzik’s header over the bar in the fourth minute. Twenty-seven seconds later, Galvin received a pass along the six yard line from sophomore Gina Righini (Salem, N.H.) and buried the ball in the top right corner of the net to give the Crusaders (1-0-1) a 1-0 advantage.
