UConn takes 3-0 win over Maine
STORRS, Conn. – UConn freshmen continued to put on an impressive early season performance, with Sam McGuire , Andrea Plucenik and Stephanie Ribeiro all scoring in the Huskies 3-0 win over Maine at Morrone Stadium on Sunday.
The Huskies controlled the ball the majority of the match outshooting Maine (1-2-0) 22-8 as the Black Bear keeper, Lauren Swant, recorded eight saves but allowed three goals falling to a 1-1 record defending the Maine net.
Connecticut’s first score came on close range shot from McGuire who was waiting in the middle of the box for a touch by Schulmann to give the Huskies a 1-0 advantage in the 21st minute. McGuire has now scored a goal in three consecutive games and Schulmann has registered an assist in every game.
Plucenik pushed the lead to 2-0 with her shot from inside the box in the 38th minute after a perfectly placed cross from Ribeiro. It was Plucenik’s first career goal and Ribeiro’s second assist of the season.
The final freshman finding the back of the net for the Huskies was Ribeiro who defeated a Maine defender in the 56th minute after senior captain Danielle Dakinsent the ball soaring up the field to Ribeiro.
UConn freshman goalkeeper Allison Saucier is now 2-1-0 on the season after recording one save. Junior keeper Leigh-Ann Jaggon saw action for the first time of her career when she replaced Saucier at 30:34.
The Huskies will hit the road for the first time of the 2012 campaign when they travel to South Bend, Ind. for the Notre Dame Invitational. UConn will face a challenging test as they are scheduled to play two nationally ranked opponents with No. 19 North Carolina on Friday at 5 p.m. and No. 25 Santa Clara on Sunday at 11 a.m.
