A WIN BUT NO BERTH
UMass tops Richmond 2-1 in OT

RICHMOND, Va. - Chris Roswess' golden goal gave UMass a 2-1 overtime victory over Richmond in Atlantic 10 action on Friday evening. The tally came after a late goal by the Spiders forced an extra period.

The win improves the Minutemen to 7-6-3 overall and 4-4-0 in the Atlantic 10, while Richmond fell to 5-10-2 overall and 2-4-2 in the league.

Roswess netted the game-winning goal in the 96th minute off a cross from Mark Dangleis. The goal was Roswess' first of the season and came off a Dangleis cross from the left flank to the back post.
After a scoreless first half, Mark DeSantis scored in the 67th minute to give UMass a 1-0 lead. Roswess fed a pass to DeSantis who scored from 10-yards out.

Richmond tied the game in the 82nd minute as Houston Oldham took a cross from the right flank tucking his shot inside the back left post.

UMass peppered the Spiders with a 27-to-10 shot advantage including a 7-to-0 mark in overtime. Jed Antoun made 13 saves for the Spiders, while Shane Curran-Hays made three in the game.

Wins by Rhode Island and Charlotte, however, ended UMass' chances at a berth to the Atlantic 10 Tournament. Charlotte moved into a tie with Fordham for third (17 points), while Rhode Island and St. Bonaventure are tied for fifth with 15 points. A win on Sunday would give UMass 15 points, but even with losses by Rhode Island and St. Bonaventure both teams hold the tie breakers over the Minutemen for the league standings. The top six teams make the league tournament.

UMass will face George Washington in the regular-season finale on Sunday afternoon in Washington, D.C.
