GETTING THEIR NUMBER
UMass wins first over ranked team since ‘08
AMHERST, Mass. - Brett Canepa scored the game-winning goal in the 85th minute as UMass defeated the No. 19 Bradley Braves on Saturday afternoon at Rudd Field.
It marked the first win over a ranked opponent for UMass since defeating No. 10 Saint Louis 2-1 on Nov. 7, 2008 at Rudd Field.
The Minutemen improved to 2-8. Bradley falls to 6-2-2.
UMass jumped on the scoreboard just before halftime as Andrew Henshaw bent a 30-yard free kick past Bradley keeper Brian Billings (3 saves) in the 39th minute.
Bradley tied things up in the 74th minute when defender Marcus Schademann made a deep run and served in a cross from the right flank. Senior forward Christian Meza was on the other end of the service for a tying header.
Canepa's second career goal proved the game-winner in the 85th minute. After David Key fired a shot which was saved by Billings, Canepa put home the rebound for the 2-1 lead.
The goal was not without controversy, however as Bradley was left scrambling a man short after a substitution and a throw in.
Shane Curran-Hays made seven saves for UMass.
