MEN'S PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Rhode Island’s Matt Ribbens
Rhode Island’s Matt Ribbens has been named the New England Soccer News Men’s College Player of the Week for the week ending October 28.
Ribbens had a part in all five of the Rams goals against Duquesne and St. Bonaventure as URI won back- to-back games.
Against the Dukes on Friday (Oct. 26), Ribbens set up the game-winning goal in the 88th minute, helping URI to the late 1-0 victory.
He went on to post seven points off a hat trick and an assist against the Bonnies on Sunday (Oct. 28), en route to Rhody’s 4-1 triumph.
Ribbens struck in the 14th minute when he headed in Robby Gargaro's redirect off a Matt Sykes free kick. However, the Bonnies tied it up just seven minutes later on a goal by Brad Beumont and the game remained knotted, 1-1, throughout the remainder of the first half.
After the break, Jamie Eckmayer headed his first goal of the season past SBU's Abel Bautista for what would prove to be the game-winner. Ribbens and Jon Cloutier both picked up assists on the play.
Ribbens went on to complete his three-goal afternoon with a pair tallies in the final 12 minutes of regulation.
