Vermont gets first win at new home

BURLINGTON, Vt. Scott Kisling's second career goal lifted the Vermont Catamounts past Rhode Island, 1-0, in the season opener for both teams.

Playing its first regular season game at newly built Virtue Field, the Catamounts struck early. Kisling was able to head in a long throw-in from teammate Sean Sweeney in the 18th minute to put UVM up 1-0.

Sweeney was issued a red card in the final seconds of the first half and Vermont played the entire second half with 10 men. The Catamounts did an effective job of defending despite the adversity and were able to keep the Rams off the scoreboard.

Dave Ramada was credited with four stops in the Vermont net to pick up his 10th career shutout. Adam Blanchard also posted four saves for URI in his first collegiate game.

Vermont moves to 1-0 to start the season and is 7-1-1 in season openers under head coach Jesse Cormier. Rhode Island begins the year at 0-1.

The Catamounts will be back in action Monday (Aug. 27) when they travel to Amherst, Mass. to take on the UMass Minutemen at 1 p.m. The game will be streamed online on a pay-per-view basis at
