Real Madrid routs Galaxy 5-1
CARSON, Calif.--- Gonzalo Higuaín and Ángel Di María each had a goal and an assist as Real Madrid rolled over the Los Angeles Galaxy 5-1 in a World Football Challenge match in front of a record crowd of 30,317 at the Home Depot Center Wednesday night.
Higuaín opened the floodgates in the second minute, connecting on a ball from Di Maria, and nine minutes later, Di Maria possessed the ball wide on the right side of the penalty area, cut into the box and slipped a shot inside the near post.
The Galaxy cut the Spaniards’ lead in half in the 23rd minute, when David Beckham curled a 30-yard free kick from the right side to the far post. Towering Omar Gonzalez headed the ball across the goal mouth and David Lopes redirected it past netminder Iker Casillas.
Real Madrid made it 3-1 in the 36th minute. Higuaín put a fake on Gonzalez and sent the ball to José Callejón, who put the ball inside the right post.
Real Madrid added another in the 49th minute. Esteban Granero played a ball in behind the stretched Galaxy defense and Morata got a touch on it with the inside of his right foot to score. Jese closed out the scoring in the 82nd minute.
Real Madrid face Santos Laguna in Las Vegas on Sunday, AC Milan at New York’s Yankee Stadium on Wednesday and then Celtic in Philadelphia on Sunday August 11.
