TORONTO FC 3, MONTREAL IMPACT 0
MONTREAL—At long last, Toronto FC ran up a lead and managed to hold it, knocking off the Montreal Impact 3-0 Wednesday night in front of 14,412 at Stade Saputo.
It was the Reds’ first win under new head coach Paul Mariner, and only their second of the season (2-10-2). It also was Montreal’s first game with DP striker Marco Di Vaio in the lineup, but all the firepower came from Toronto.
Torsten Frings opened the scoring in the 52nd minute, with a 25-yard free kick. Twenty minutes later, Ryan Johnson chipped Impact goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts to make the score 2-0, and Danny Koevermans piled on with a third goal in the 78th, off Ashtone Morgan’s set-up pass.
The Impact (5-9-3,18 pts) put only two of 14 shots on goal, both saved by TFC goalkeeper Milos Kocic.
