THIRD STRAIGHT FOR FLASH
WNY wins WPSL Elite title on pks
ROCHESTER, NY---The Western New York Flash came from behind for a 1-1 draw, then defeated the Chicago Red Stars in penalty kicks in to capture the WPSL Elite championship at Sahlenís Stadium on Saturday.
The win is the third straight title in three different leagues for the Flash, who won the W-League Championship in 2010 and the Womenís Professional Soccer title in 2011.
The Red Stars struck first in the 40th minute Ashleigh Ellenwood pounced on a loose ball inside the six yard box.
In the dying moments of stoppage time, substitute Toni Pressley received a pass from Canadian International Jodi-Ann Robinson and struck a left footed shot from outside of the box. The ball hit the crossbar and went over the line to send the game into overtime, which went scoreless.
Adriana easily scored the first pk, sending Chicagoís keeper Jamie Forbes in the wrong direction. Lauren Fowlkes equalized for Chicago. Defender Katherine Reynolds was up next for the WNY Flash and slotted the ball past Forbes. Julianne Sitch lined up next to shoot for Chicago and Brittany Cameron was able to make the save.
McCall Zerboniís shot was saved by Forbes. The Chicago keeper then took a penalty herself, scoring to tie things up at two each. Australian international Emily Van Egmond was the scoed to give the Flash a lead. Chicagoís Michelle Wenino missed, hitting the post. Midfielder Angela Salem stepped up and scored her penalty, giving the Flash the victory (4:2) and the WPSL Elite title.
