Reis has surgery on left knee

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – New England Revolution goalkeeper Matt Reis underwent successful surgery on his left knee Thursday afternoon. The procedure, quadriceps tendon debridement, was performed by Dr. Thomas Gill at Massachusetts General Hospital earlier today.

Reis, 34, underwent rotator cuff surgery on his left shoulder on Dec. 1, and has been rehabilitating since then. While Reis’ expected rehabilitation time for his knee is 8-12 weeks, he is expected to be sidelined for approximately the next 12-16 weeks in total while he continues to rehabilitate his shoulder.

Reis posted a career-best goals against average in 2009 – an 0.96 mark in 24 regular-season matches – while posting eight shutouts and leading Major League Soccer in saves (114) and save percentage (.814). Reis currently holds every New England career goalkeeping record, including games played in goal (174), games started in goal (173), minutes played in goal (15,582), goals against average (1.25), wins (71), saves (706), shutouts (47) and save percentage (.735).

The Revolution recently acquired veteran Preston Burpo from Colorado, who is expected to be the team’s opening-day goalkeeper while Reis continues his rehabilitation.
