Revs take defender A.J. Soares
BALTIMORE---The New England Revolution selected defender A.J. Soares for the University of California with their first pick (6th overall) in the MLS SuperDraft at the Baltimore Convention Center Thursday.

Soares wa a finalist for the M.A.C. Hermann Trophy this season, while racking up honors as an NSCAA First Team All American, Pac-10 Player of the Year and LA Soccer News College Player of the Year.
A native of Solana Beach, California, Soares said he is looking forward to the move across country.
“It’s a place I’ll love being,” he said of New England.
Soares did not know the Revs would select him with their first pick in the draft .
“I didn’t speak to the staff until just now, the 22-year old Soares said.”I am going to learn from the staff and the rest of the players on the team,” said Soares, who was an attacking player before is career at Cal is not sure what role the Revs will want to use hin in.
“I am looking to contribute,” he said. “All I can control is how hard I work.”
Revolution hopes the 6-0, 170 lb Soares will help solidify the team’s back line.
“I see him fitting in at cener back,” said Nicol. “He’s got some size, but he’s a football player, he wants to touch the ball. We think he’s going to help organize things in the back."
