FC Cincinnati elevates assistant coach


CINCINNATI -- Former U.S. national team captain John Harkes has been fired as head coach by FC Cincinnati, the team announced Friday night.

Former Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2 coach Alan Koch, who had joined Harkesí staff recently, will take over for the teamís second USL season.

ďAfter careful consideration of what is in the best interest of the FC Cincinnati organization, I have decided to relieve John Harkes of his duties as FCC head coach, effective immediately," FC Cincinnati president and general manager Jeff Berding said. "We wish John all the best and thank him for his efforts in our inaugural year. We believe we have an exciting team and look forward to a special season with our fans at Nippert Stadium."

Harkes, who played for the New England Revolution in 2000-01 and won two MLS Cups with D.C. United, led FC Cincinnati to a third-place finish in the Eastern Conference, then lost to the Charleston Battery in the conference quarterfinals. Koch guided the Whitecaps 2 to the Western Conference final after finishing sixth in the regular-season standings. Koch, a South African, coached Simon Fraser to the NCAA Division 2 final four in 2012.
