Abbondanziero watches from bench as Lehmann's pk saves oust Argentina
Two of World Cup 2006’s most dynamic offenses put on a lackluster show through the first 45 minutes of Friday’s quarterfinal at the Olympiastadion, but made up for it after the intermission. When the dust finally settled, netminder Jens Lehmann had saved two penalty kicks and Germany had advanced to the semifinals over Argentina, 1-1 (4-2).

Argentina survived a tense, 120-minute marathon against a determined Mexican side last night to book a spot in the World Cup quarterfinals. Forward Maxi Rodriguez scored off a spectacular volley in the eighth minute of extra time to lift the Argentines to a 2-1 second-round victory.

He swirled a blue and white Argentine jersey over his head, as he and his countrymen serenaded the team with: "We're going to leave as champions, just like in '86."
