Portugal survives ref, ill-tempered affair
There were moments in the 90-minute match during Portugal’s 1-0 World Cup victory over the Netherlands they actually played a little soccer in Nuremberg, Germany on Sunday night. Inbetween the fouls, 16 yellow cards and a Cup record four red cards handed out by Russian referee Valentin Ivanov, the teams managed to kick the ball instead of each other in one of the most ill-tempered and nasty matches in the 76-year history of the competition.

Portugal beats Mexico 2-1
Some teams just have all the luck, no matter what they do. Just ask Mexico, which qualified for the second round of the World Cup on Wednesday. The Mexicans missed a key penalty kick early in the second half, had a player red-carded and then dropped a 2-1 Group D decision to Portugal., 2-1. The Mexicans still managed to survive and play another day.

Portugal advances for first time in 40 years
FRANKFURT, Germany -- Portugal got the job done.
After failing to score in the first half of play and being booed off the field at halftime, the talented Portuguese squad responded with second-half goals from Anderson Deco and Christiano Ronaldo to defeat Iran 2-0. With the result, Portugal now has six points and advances to the next round of play, while Iran is eliminated from the competition.

Portugal learned a tough lesson four years ago: allowing an early goal in the World Cup opener sets a bad tone for the tournament. Sunday, the Portuguese righted that wrong. Pauleta scored three minutes in and Portugal beat Angola 1-0 at Rhein-Energie-Stadion Sunday.
