SERBIA-MONTENEGRO : HOW THEY QUALIFIED
Serbia & Montenegro surprisingly finished atop
European Group 7 with a 6-0-4 (22 points) record over
second-place Spain (5-0-5, 20), outscoring its opposition,
16-1. The country qualified with a 1-0 victory over
Bosnia-Herzegovina on a Mateja Kezman goal in Belgrade
on October 12, 2005. In some respects, the result was
a loss for Serbia & Montenegro as FIFA levied a
$28,000 fine and ordered the National Team to play one
home game in an empty stadium due to crowd trouble.
Rival supporters pelted each other with flares and seats.
There is lingering hostility from the ethnic war between
Serbs and Muslims in the early 1990s.
