Revs U-18s advance in Academy Playoffs

FRISCO, Texas – The New England Revolution Under-18 team claimed its first-ever spot in the U.S. Soccer Development Academy Finals Week behind a convincing 4-2 victory against fellow MLS club the LA Galaxy on Thursday. Also in action, the Under-16 team closed out its Development Academy Showcase with a 1-1 draw against the Dallas Texans.

Peguy Ngatcha (Manchester, N.H.) found the back of the net in just the eighth minute of play. Credited with the assist, Dominik Machado (Attleboro, Mass.) went on to score the Revs’ three additional goals. His first came on a counter attack, Gabe Gissie (Worcester, Mass.) making a run down the right flank before finding Machado for the finish in the 15th minute. Danny Apajee (Cranston, R.I.) was later brought down in the box in the 59th minute and Machado stepped up to convert the resulting penalty kick. LA’s Justin Dhillon then pulled one back for the Galaxy in the 65th to make it 3-1. But Machado had one more in him, combining with Gissie again in the 74th minute. Raul Mendiola tallied for the Galaxy in the 80th, and the score was 4-2 at the final whistle.

With the win, New England (1-0-2) finished at the top of Group 6 as the group’s only unbeaten team with 5 pts. The San Jose Earthquakes (1-1-1) beat the Dallas Texans (1-1-1), 3-2, on Thursday morning, tying the two teams with 4 pts. each. Based on goal differential, Dallas finished second (+1), while San Jose placed third (-2). LA (1-2-0) finished in fourth place with 3 pts.

Though scheduled to play the Montreal Impact, logistical hiccups required a last-minute opponent change and the Under-16s battled local side the Dallas Texans to a 1-1 draw on Thursday. Kicking off in 94-degree heat at 1 p.m. local time, the conditions made for a tough third game of the U.S. Soccer Development Academy Showcase. Dallas scored in the 10th minute, putting the Revs in a hole for much of the match. But second-half substitutes Mike Faria (West Warwick, R.I.) and Justin Freitas (North Attleboro, Mass.) capitalized on their fresh legs, combining in the 72nd for a late-game equalizer.

With the draw, the U16s finished the Showcase with an even 1-1-1 record. The team opened with a 2-1 victory against Internationals (Ohio) on Monday and suffered a 4-0 loss to Real Colorado’s U18 squad on Wednesday.

The U.S. Soccer Development Academy Finals Week – featuring each of the eight playoff groups’ top finishers – will be held from July 14-20 in Houston. Group matches will be played at Houston Amateur Sports Park on July 14, 16 and 18. Placement games will then be played on July 20, with the title game taking place at BBVA Compass Stadium – home of the Houston Dynamo.
